The Burning Bush

In 1983, Israeli friends of Makuya held the tenth memorial of the late Ikuro Teshima (1910-1973) in Jerusalem. The following is the first part of Prof. Pinchas Hacohen Peli's message from the meeting.

This evening, we come together here to commemorate the late Prof. Abraham Ikuro Teshima, the founder of the Makuya Movement.

The students from Makuya began the memorial by singing one of the hymns which Prof. Teshima wrote. It sings of Moses' encounter with the burning bush on Mount Horeb. 1

Responding to God's calling there, Moses was later led to Mount Sinai, to Matan Torah (the Giving of the Torah), and to have a ray of light shine on his face. 2

Prof. Teshima had a similar encounter with God while wandering in the wilderness of Mt. Aso. Responding to God's calling, he began the Makuya Movement in 1948, the same year when the State of Israel was founded. So the Makuya Movement's destiny and vision are connected with the people, the land, and the state of Israel.

We are people in the wilderness today, and the Makuya Movement in its essence is the "burning bush." The bush also warms the heart and enlightens the eyes to see friendship of people who come from afar.

Note 1: Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed.
(Exodus 3:1-2 NKJV)

Note 2: So he (Moses) was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandment. Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses' hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.
(Exodus 34:28-30 NKJV)
