It was in 1957 that I went to the United States as an American Field Service exchange student at the age of seventeen. Forty-nine high school students were chosen from all over Japan for the purpose of AFS. The purpose was to promote understanding among different nations and peoples to avoid any future wars.

In those days, twelve years after World War II, an earnest hope for future peaceful world was entrusted to the shoulders of young people. We took a military plane down to the U.S., which was quite bumpy and jumpy, but it did not bother the bunch of hopeful high school youths.
